hoj lidi!

e všeho nejdříve, Tales of the Past II (a jiné části z této série) byly vytvořeny ve hře "World of Warcraft", kde můžete prožít stejná dobrodružství stejně, jako třeba ve světě Lord of the Rings. V tomto světě vám roste síla, bojujete s různými obludami (nebo jinými hráči), získáváte nová přátelství a spolupracujete s jinými spoluhráči.

Herci a dobrovolníci

Takže potřebujeme dobrovolníky a reklamu! Při tvorbě Tales of the Past II jsem potřeboval více reklamy.

Naštěstí hra dovoluje posílat e-maily a psát soukromé zprávy on-line hráčům.

Herní postup a umírající kameramani

- stejně jako je to u Lord of the Rings.

"Natáčíme zde scénu do nového filmu Tales of the Past II, jděte prosím pryč.

Komentáře a zvukové efekty

Uf! Konečně jsme se dostali přes všechna rizika a potíže spojené s nahráváním. A jsme připraveni jednotlivé scény sestříhat.

Produkt

Když to shrnu - při výrobě Tales of the Past II jsem zažil množství legrace a zábavy.

Tales of the Past II - Behind the Movie

Hello people! For some time I’ve wanted to write some sort of ”Behind the movie” article for Tales of the Past II, basically because so many of the players of this game have been wondering how it was all done. However, I have also had many people outside the World of Warcraft watching this and naturally they have been wondering about many other aspects of the creation of this kind of movie. Hence, I’ve chosen to explain parts that might be obvious to those already familiar with the game, including the following introduction.

Introduction

First of all, the movie Tales of the Past II (and the other parts of the series) have been created within the game “World of Warcraft”, in which you take upon you the role of an adventurer in a huge fantasy world, much like that of Lord of the Rings. In this world you grow stronger, fight various creatures (and other players), gain friendships and cooperate with other players. In many ways this game is similar to a “real” middle age world, complete with cities of trade, everyday discussions and meetings between players. Because the world of this game is so vast and because the amount of possibilities is enormous, it has been natural that a huge amount of movies have been created within the game.

Now, how do you film anything in the game, you might ask? Well you won’t go to the local city and hire a camera team or anything like that – what you’ll do is you’ll get a program called Fraps or Gamecam. These programs allow you to record anything you see on the screen and save this. In other words, when you run around as a character within the World of Warcraft and press the “Record” button, you will start recording whatever you might do in the game. You can also zoom in so that you won’t see your character, but instead you will see everything through the eyes of your character, making your character a walking camera!

After you’ve gotten your recordings, you simply clip it all together and – ZAP - you have a movie! Sounds simple, right? Only, there are certain problems involved when shooting a film within the World of Warcraft, especially if you want to make it large scale.

Actors and volunteer

Oh well, you have made a basic script for your movie and you know pretty much what kind of movie you want to create – now let us find some actors to play it out! Naturally, in World of Warcraft (also known as WoW), you will need other players to do the acting – these might be some friends of yours that are up for the task or perhaps just a bored individual, standing at the local river and having nothing better to do than fishing. You approach the upcoming actor with the idea of your huge and epic movie and most likely they’ll say something like: “Yeah, sounds awesome, but right now I’m improving my fishing skill, get lost…” – How can that be? Steven Spielberg never had such problems! But then again, he had funds and contracts, something you can’t manage within the game. So we need volunteers and we need promotion! Making Tales of the Past II, I came to realise exactly how much promotion meant for a movie and creating the hype around this movie has taken as much time as creating the movie itself. Luckily for me, I had already made some previous movies, granting me a basic “reputation” and a small, loyal amount of players that wanted to participate in the movie – in most cases, these came to be the main actors, such as Yimo and Blazer for instance, but to create massive battles with hundreds of people attending, you need something more.

Luckily, the game allows you to send mails around and to send private messages to players that are online. Combined with a community forum, I was able to gather people by sending approximately 200 mails to guild leaders/officers (a guild is a group of players cooperating for different purposes. A guild most often includes 50-100 people) and by sending private messages to approximately 2000 people in total and answering questions from these – don’t try this at home unless you’re fast on the keyboard! Such a process takes approximately 4 weeks – you also have to make sure that your date and time for a certain scene does not interfere with some other event in the game, which for instance happened to waste 3 weeks of preparation at one point, while at another occasion, we lost another 2 weeks of preparation due to confusion about whether the scene was to be made at night or day (!). However, with enough time and work put into it, you’ll eventually have informed approximately 1500 people of a certain scene and you can expect approximately 10% of these to turn up, which is acceptable. However, then comes another bunch of problems involved in shooting within a game like World of Warcraft.

Game Mechanics and dying cameramen

Now, one thing that is important to understand in WoW is the fact that there are two opposite factions. These factions do not like each other and most often they just kill each other when they meet. When you start your character in the game, you have to choose whether you will join the Alliance side (the righteous knights and mysterious elves, etc.) or the Horde side (Orcs and trolls, etc) – again, much like Lord of the Rings.

The thing about these two factions is that they are unable to speak inside the game. A human player can speak with a dwarf player for instance, because they are both from the alliance, but if a human player tries to speak with an orc, the chat will be changed into meaningless text. For this reason, most film makers choose to have all their characters be from one faction alone, or at least the vast majority. However, it had always been my ambition to work with both sides and so we did. Communication is possible by using other programs, such as a program called Ventrilo, which allows you to speak with other players (including those from the other faction) through a microphone.

In most cases your role as an instructor is then to give out directions and orders through Ventrilo and then hope that the representatives from the other faction that can hear you, will pass on the message to the massive amount of players waiting for directions. Try to imagine yourself as a human character standing alone in front of 150 horde players. Usually they would kill you right away, but your hope is that the guy on Ventrilo will tell them not to. However, even when having your directions and orders passing through to the other side, there is always the occasional orc that can’t avoid giving you a little slap with his club and when one has started, the others seem to think something like: “Hey that looks fun! It must be part of the script, let me get a shot at him too!” and in seconds you and your team are lying dead in the dirt. Patience is something you’ll also learn tons of in many other situations – for instance we had to shoot a scene in a snowy place called Winterspring, where Yimo was to be chased by a large skeleton patrol. Now, something that is hard is to get enough players if you can only use those players that have chosen to play skeleton characters (also known as Undead). Arh, but the game has brought us a great solution! With a special and cheap elixir bought in a city far away, you can become a skeleton, no matter if you’re an orc, human or something else! Brilliant, this way we can get a much larger group of people to attend! We get ready at the location, Yimo is ready to run and people are told to drink their elixirs and most players turn into skeletons and are ready for shooting, but… There are certain side effects with the elixir, resulting in other effects – these can make you small for instance, or perhaps make you light as a feather – but they don’t turn you into a skeleton! The effect of the elixir lasts 10 minutes and you have to wait 2 minutes before you can drink another elixir, in case you got the wrong effect for instance. Now, with a little calculation you can easily figure out how hard it can be to shoot a scene this way: 30 players have turned into skeletons and are ready to shoot. However, 5 players are still orcs/humans/whatever and are standing in the way! You tell them to hide behind the nearest rock and you start getting messages like: “What rock?” and “But I want to be in the scene, just give me a little more time, then I can try again!” etc. In the meanwhile, some of the old skeleton effects will have worn out and voila – you have an extremely tired instructor. When a huge dragon comes to attack the crew in the middle of the next scene, things start to get unnerving…

Most often, though, the biggest challenge comes from other players. For starters, take the dragon I spoke of just before? Well, after it had attacked, some players decided to regain their health by sitting down and grabbing some food. Problem was that they did not realise that in that very second we were shooting the dramatic scene, in which the skeletons in the cave attack Yimo. Take a good look and you’ll notice a player sitting down and having a drink while the rest attack – it made it to the actual movie!

Such things take place on larger scales as well. When we were recording scenes for the city raids that you see in the intro of Tales of the Past II, we only used horde players. That meant that I had agreed a certain place and time with a lot of hordes and we made sure not to tell the alliance players. Why? Because the scene was going to take place just outside the alliance cities and if there is something you cannot control, then it is patriotic alliance players that won’t allow the “horde scum” to enter their city. Hence, we practiced the scenes another desolate place and when we were ready, we moved to the city gates. What happens then is basically some alliance players that start yelling “HORDES IN STORMWIND!!! COME QUICK!!!” – usually this is just bullshit, yelled by some kids that are bored so most players ignore it. However, when more respected players start to spread the message, it’s only a matter of minutes before you have 50-70 alliance players standing ready to face the hordes. Most of them have no idea that we’re filming a movie scene, even though I had a lot of the crew trying to explain the situation. “We are filming a movie scene for the movie Tales of the Past II, please move away and ignore the scene, thank you!” was replied with conversations like: “WARRIORS RUN FIRST, I HEAL YOU!! KILL ALL HORDES!!” – in other words you have a very short duration of time to shoot your scenes.

Another problem involved with raiding capital cities actually came up within my own guild. We had agreed to do the scene on a Saturday at 19.00, so when I was invited to a wedding within the game at that exact time in that exact capital city, you can imagine that I felt rather uncomfortable with the situation. Naturally, I wouldn’t be the most popular guest at the party if I was responsible for bringing 150 hordes to the city, an army that could potentially go and literarily kill all the wedding guests (and many of them would find that quite fun), including the newly weds. Luckily the wedding was postponed!

The final battle scene

My goal with making these series were originally to involve as many people from both sides into making a huge project. Naturally we wanted to overdo the last movie when we made the sequel, so we had to make something big. We chose to make a huge battle scene at a place called Grim Batol. The good thing about this place is that it is guarded by tons of big dragon-like creatures and it is rather hard to get to. It is also pretty remote and hence you will not see people there besides from the actors. Great! Then we can focus on the scene itself – however, problems arise again, as the game engine is simply not meant to support such a large amount of people gathered in one area (we were approximately 500 people gathered at the same place in the game) and the result is that you get a lot of latency. This gave a lot more or less fun results. For instance we had to switch out the player who was to play the alliance general, just before he was to hold his speech. Originally the role was intended for a player called Charlie (you can see him at first when you see the armies, a dwarf in golden armor standing in front of the alliance army). The reason was that he was completely unable to perform any actions due to the latency, so it wasn’t very dramatic to have him stand still in front of the army. We made a quick switch and were able to shoot the scene with another character, Serphentos, and in the meanwhile the 200 players had to wait for approximately 1 hour. Anyhow, the hordes arrived a bit later than the alliance (we had agreed upon separate arrival times) and they positioned themselves as they were meant to etc. Everything seemed to go pretty smooth until suddenly the server broke down. What basically happened was that the amount of players gathered at the same place had caused the server to shut down, meaning that the entire population of that server (approximately 5000-10.000 people) were unable to play for some time. It got up again pretty fast though and we were able to continue.

Now, we were at a very interesting part of the scene, because so far we had simply placed the armies opposite of each other and so far no fighting had been made. What we had to shoot next was the horde army charging into the alliance army and making a brilliant scene with a great clash and a lot of fighting. We got ready and the hordes were given the signal to start running. Nothing happened. Then slowly, some of them started and a bit later most of the horde army were moving. Unfortunally, they kept moving and instead of clashing with the alliance army, 75% of the horde army ran directly through the massive alliance army. Now, normally this would not have been a big problem and we would have just tried again – the latency was a thing we had to accept and we knew something like this might happen. The bad thing, however, was that the alliance army was placed with their backs towards the edge of a cliff… Some time passed before we realised that half the horde army had died in a lemming like suicide and we were happy that we had already recorded most of what we needed!

Another thing that is included in the final battle is Fylla (the Orc hunter in the black armor with the dragon behind him) and his “pet-Dragon” (think we called him Drag). Normally, players have small pets such as tigers or bats and normally players are unable to have dragons as pets. However, we wanted to add something special for this scene and hence we performed a small trick. Basically you can’t “control” dragons within the game, so it was rather tricky to actually get one for the scene. Luckily we had a huge dragon chilling out nearby. Basically we had to clear a route to this dragon (read: kill all the tough guards before him) and when we arrived at the dragon, we had to “tease” him so that he would follow us to the scene. By teasing I mean that we basically had to hit him continuously so he was kept irritated - that way we were able to drag him the whole way to the scene. Of course a couple of actors died in the process, but that’s occupational hazard.

When we had finally gotten the dragon to the scene, we actually had Serphentos keeping it occupied, while Fylla pretended to be all chilling with his big dragon. If you look close at the scenes in the movie, you’ll see Serphentos having trouble with the big dragon right from the start (behind Fylla), while we also have recordings of Fylla getting barbequed by his own pet. Again, it’s not always easy to be an actor in this kind of movie.

Towards the end of the scenes, problems arose as a small group of alliance players came to the gathering with the sole purpose of killing every horde they could find. Naturally, this gave a lot of frustration and some hordes might start wondering if this is the general attitude of the alliance side and suddenly you have a big conflict to take care of. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, as we usually have “death-squads” hanging around the scenes. These squads are there for the sole purpose of executing players that are in the way or do not listen to directions – or, as in this case, to kill other players. The problem, however, was that the death-squad from the horde side had run off the clip in the lemming suicide, which had made them go home, so basically we had to close recordings at this point because of the chaos that followed. Luckily, we had already gotten most of what we needed!

Voice acting and sound effects

Phew! You’ve finally gotten through all the hazards and trouble with recording your scenes and now you’re ready to put it all together. An important thing is missing, however. As I made the first movies, I got a lot of comments and constructive criticism about the lack of voices in my movie. Basically there were only subtitles and you just saw the characters speaking, but being rushed, the other movies did not include voice acting. I naturally wanted to fix this, so I searched for voice actors. However, these are not just hanging on trees – how do you find a voice actor that is able to do a gnome voice for instance? Or a brutish Orc voice for that sake? Well in most cases it’s a matter of luck and for instance I was lucky to find a guy I knew in the game, who was able to do an imitation of a gnome, while later on I talked with a British 13 year old guy (Jack Ryan), who turned out to have the basic skills to do a great Orc voiceover (the speech held by the Orc in the end is acted out by Jack Ryan). In many cases, effects and tuning are your friends to change and alter voices, for instance in Jack Ryan’s case. But, in all cases the voice actor himself delivers the core material.

The way we actually do the voice acting is mostly over MSN. I write the script and send it out to the voice actors and they get time to read it. After this, they use a computer microphone and start doing the lines from the script. Basically they had no idea of the general idea of the scenes they were acting out, except for parts that I had told them about. Basically they only knew things like: “you have to sound angry with a touch of disappointment.” – they never got to see the actual scenes before the final movie was out. When receiving a voiceover line, I was then able to incorporate it into the movie and start doing lip synchronisation and eventually you work your way through the whole movie like this.

However, voiceovers are not enough to make the sound side of a movie interesting, you’ll have to add ambience sounds, weapon sounds, footsteps etc. as well. Most often you record this directly within the game, however, in the case of Tales of the Past II, every single sound effect is added manually in the editing process. Imagine having to add a weapon clash sound every time two players hit each other in a fight – that is a lot of miniature work! Mixing the musical soundtrack to go with it all as well makes it even more complicated. The good thing, however, is that it allows you a lot more freedom and it allows you to make a more dramatic and interesting soundtrack for the movie.

The product

When it all comes down, this kind of thing is a lot of fun as well – of course it is! In the making of Tales of the Past II, we gradually got more and more support and backup from the people from our server and it was extremely fun to have so many people willing to attend in the end! You could actually talk about a “fan base” even before the movie was out and that was in many ways a touching and inspiring thing. Having your movie downloaded by tens of thousands of people has also been an awesome experience and I will look forward to working on the next and last movie!

In the meanwhile, I hope many others will get inspired to try out on their own and create similar movies in the World of Warcraft, I am sure there will always be entertaining stories to be told from their filming adventures as well as their movies!
